It seems that some people are unhappy about Toronto-born artist Drake receiving a key to Shelby County, the county seat of Memphis, Tennessee. One fan even expressed their dissatisfaction on behalf of Memphis rap stars like GloRilla.
Drake spent his childhood summers in Memphis. His father, Dennis Graham, hails from the second most populous city in Tennessee. Throughout his career, Drake has paid tribute to his “second home” in his music and videos.
“We love our own. Memphis music touches the world. You got a lot of Memphis blood in you and you’re definitely touching the world,” said Shelby County Chairman Mickell Lowery to Drake.
A clip of Drake receiving the key to Shelby County went viral on social media. One Twitter user responded by tweeting, “This is so disrespectful to Young Dolph, Key Glock, GloRilla, Three 6 Mafia, Yo Gotti, Moneybagg Yo… need I go on?!”
I got this key almost a year ago ❤️❤️❤️ https://t.co/BKLM4kr3N5
GloRilla quote-tweeted the critic and shared her own thoughts on their complaints about Drake accepting a key to Shelby County, Tennessee. The rapper, known for her song “Tomorrow 2,” posted, “I got this key almost a year ago ❤️❤️❤️.”
At the 2023 BET Awards earlier this week, GloRilla made it clear that she is a fan of Drake. The 23-year-old creator of the EP “Anyways, Life’s Great” expressed her desire to collaborate with the OVO Sound leader in the future.
“Most definitely. We’re gonna try to make it work,” said GloRilla regarding the possibility of making music with the five-time Grammy winner. GloRilla’s song “F.N.F. (Let’s Go)” received a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Performance in 2023.
In addition, GloRilla received six nominations at this year’s BET Awards, which took place on Sunday, June 25. She also performed her song “Lick or Sum” at the ceremony. GloRilla won the award for Best Breakthrough Hip Hop Artist at the 2022 BET Hip Hop Awards.
