Hollywood legend Samuel L. Jackson may be known for his iconic roles, but there’s one thing he hasn’t owned in three decades: Nike sneakers. In the latest episode of Complex’s Sneaker Shopping, Jackson shared the reason behind his absence of Nike footwear since the 1990s.
Back in the ’90s, Jackson’s friend and fellow actor, Bill Nunn, had a Nike deal and offered to introduce Jackson to the brand. Unfortunately, Nike dropped the ball and failed to provide Jackson with any sneakers, leaving a sour taste in his mouth. However, just as luck would have it, Reebok reached out to Jackson and a new partnership was formed.
“He called Nike and they were like, ‘Who?’ and then the next day Reebok showed up, and gave me these catalogs and said ‘Anything you want,'” Jackson explained. “Nike calls later and goes ‘Uh,’ and I said ‘No, I’m good.'”
Despite not owning any Nike sneakers since the ’90s, Jackson revealed his current collection of sneakers, which includes over 150 pairs of the classic Adidas Stan Smiths and Rod Lavers.
Reflecting on his collection, Jackson shared a story of stumbling upon nine pairs of Stan Smiths in his garage last year. “I had them in boxes and I hadn’t labeled them,” he said. “I took them to New York when I was going there to do a play.”
